Is it time for a Network Server?   by Jack shaw

The words ‘Network’ and ‘Server’ often conjure up images of banks of machinery and wires tucked away in huge basement computer rooms, managed by technical specialists. Today however, Server-based networks can be found in more than 20% of small businesses who have more than one Mac or PC as users see the efficiencies and improved productivity of a Server, and more specifically of server leasing.

So, what are the benefits of running a server?

* Centralised data, enabling you to better organise and manage your information.

* Easy backup and restoration of data.

* Employee collaboration and data sharing.

* Allows a mobile work force.

* Shared high speed broadband access.

* Easy setup of new computers, applications etc.

* Higher processing power.

* Professional email management with shared calendars and contacts.

* No more arbitrary restrictions on server space.

* Host sites with space to accommodate multimedia, music, streaming video.

* Freedom to run a choice of server side set ups e.g. MySQL, ASP, JAVA, PHP, PERL.

The biggest benefit is probably freedom. Many hosting companies limit what you can and cannot do via their terms of service. When you run your own server you are responsible for the terms of service. You are bound by the law and depending on the servers intention, other regulatory frameworks e.g. PCI. You can also reduce costs, especially if you are thinking of investing in the higher end of the market. In fact it is a good option to explore options such as Apple Xserve finance or other lease packages.

Related to Freedom, is control. You manage, run and administer your own server. By owning the admin on a server you can be confident that patches can be tested and updated, that security settings are appropriate and that access is granted only to your own authorised people.

A looser benefit is the scope to learn. Running your own server gives hands-on access to the hub of your infrastructure; be it small or large. By fully understanding what lies at the heart of your IT environment you will gain confidence in yours, and your businesses abilities.
